So during the Christmas break, i decided to read a few books. This was one of them

"Steal Like an Artist" by Austin Kleon
This was a part of TOP but this task in TOP and appropriation has also deeply affected my practice.

The best thing is, my practice is directly linked in with my TOP

The more i read, the more connections i made with my work and the theme of Appropriation. 

Now ill be giving you quotes from the book now and then, i marked them down as i read the book.

This is Brick Lane Market #6, 2015 

This i painted near the end of 2014. 

I really enjoyed this piece because one of the early layers was the bunny rabbit drawing in the background, then i was revolving the graffiti around the eye as the centre piece. 

I like how the eye has this dark seemingly endless visual outcome more or less right in the middle of the painting, with its white splatters of paint, it seems like a never ending universe 

Almost a story 

I mentioned in one of the earlier blogs that we went to visit the British Museum last year, and went to study a few paintings. 

Two of the paintings we visited was one by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, and the other was a Goya drawing. 

Now the story here is, Goya, was a great admirer of Tiepolo's work and copied his style. He wanted to learn his style, master it. This is like me and my work, me copying the style of graffiti artist out in London but the only difference is, I'm changing the medium and surface in which i apply the work on. 

A quote from the book in a way, helped me, made sense, on what is plagiarism. 

" If you copy from one author, its plagiarism, but if you copy from many, its research" - Wilson Mizner 

Throughtout this territories of practice, it has been insightful

I am in a group with 2 girls, whom do video. I do painting. 

Yes its different but it is really interesting to expand my knowledge on the subject of appropriation throughout different disciplines within art, not just painting. 

But the subject of appropriation is beginning to be too focused. 

It is better to have a broad knowledge of different theories and themes of art, yet us concentrating solely on Appropriation can cause us to loose sight of other things around us. 

Its been good so far. Now for the Symposium.....

What really captivates me from this piece is that it is rather narrative. It speaks. like a debate or disagreement of something, an essence of dispute and anger yet the colours contradicts that

As you can see, the previous pieces i used a kind of, glossy acrylic paint 

In this most recent piece i did not. The background i though in my opinion may have been to bright therefore i decided not to do it.

Halcyon Gallery - Dale Chihuly "Lumiere" 

Before the start of the new term, i had arrived to London early, sending time with the family before sending my little brother off to school in North Yorkshire. 

We came across the Halcyon Gallery in the evening and the interior was glowing, you could see the illumines-sense from the outside 

This immediate turned our heads as it caught out attention 

Inside was an exhibition exhibiting Dale Chihuly, who in this series of work made Acrylic Light Drawings!

Lumiere is the first exhibition of Dale Chihuly's Acrylic light drawings. 

This style of his has been developing throughout his carer. "Beginning as illustrative tools used to direct and inspire his visions for glass - his drawings have become increasingly important as independent outlets for his expressions, whilst simultaneously providing a vital means for him to release his energy" 

His work is very expressive and abstract

From the light, you could see almost completely through the acrylic paint, which gives the audience a visual texture. Like there a more mark makings within the marks itself!! Brilliant concept

 Chihuly's Work has no direct link to my work

Yes it is colourful but the  is somewhat different. Mark makings are in few aspects similar. 

It is however very interesting to see this kind of concept. this new innovative idea being processed and seen. Very interesting

Not only paintings but sculptures too. 

They make wonderful interior designs and possibly an iconic feature 

The overall curation of the place was impressive. 

I enjoyed this show very much.

These paintings went a lot better. I feel more comfortable knowing what i am doing now in my practice, its been a while since i have created work this fluidly. 

I Dont actually plan what i am going to paint, i look at my research and decide then and there. Colour is a factor when thinking, i tend to choose darker colours now for the background therefore the brighter more vibrato images in the foreground will catch more contrast.

Not everything is appropriated. I have actually created some things on my own. Like these vomit like patterns. That was my own interpretation of what i thought would look good in this painting. The directions guides the viewers eyes throughout the whole painting. This is good 

This is more playful, makes you happy and energetic. Positive energy is radiated form this kind of painting which is why i enjoy creating it

This piece seems rather chaotic  

Lots of things happening, many subjects within the image, especially the foreground with the 5 horsemen riding around the painting, like a tornado of activity and colour overwhelming the audience.

This piece i actually think went better than the previous two. The triangular patter is a definite positive that went well. It flows through the whole painting which connects everything together, bringing it into one to the audience. 

Colours are bright, like sun like bright. Feeling of it is light. 

Compositions isn't too bad, In this piece, i decided to use more image than text. 

The start with Brick Lane Market #1 and #2, i used around 70% image and 30% text. 

In the others like "Alleyway: and "Berwick Street" i used like 70% text and 30% imagery. 

I wanted to create balance. 

In this i tried to go for a 60% imagery and 40% text 

David Choe : An inspiration towards my practice

CONTINUING WORK - 2ND YEAR CHELSEA COLLEGE 

This is an artist that has inspired me through my new series of work in my current practice. His name ladies and gentleman is David Chow. He is a Graffiti artist that has made a name for himself after his commission with Facebook in which he took shares instead of cash, because of Facebook's success, his shares are priceless. 

His work however are too priceless. 

Ive always loved colour, in these pieces, the overall use of colour and colour combinations creates nothing but positive energy when viewed upon. Vibrant and energetic. 

He always has a main subject composed into the image, but surrounded with other visual elements 

His style is so free, variation of movements and use of colour interest me

He is the main artist i have been looking at at being inspired by his work i have decided to create some of my own. 

I continued doing what i did from my last piece. Concentrating on the Graffiti/Street art in London Markets and also unnoticed places such as alleyways, corners and remote locations. 

My first piece was "Bricklane Market #1, 2014" 

Personally i think these pieces work really well. There is a strong depth in the image, and colour use is strong and vibrant. Very aesthetically pleasing to the viewers because it catches their attention. 

 These two pieces i made at similar times. They have a similarity through the use of colours and composition of images, and the balance between text and imagery.

This upcoming series of paintings, i am capturing the presence of a location through man-made marks and decisions and projecting them to the audience through paint. 

I went to Portobello road and gathered in information, i photographed marks such like these:

I painted on a piece of wood to emphasise the streets atmosphere/mood.

I painted with a method of layering

See how it progresses......

From here i continued layering images and marks

The crowdingness talks business on the street, colours show liveliness and life, spirit. 

chalk marks and writings, describes the selling atmosphere in this road.

This was a day painting. Interested in a south east asian artist named Attasit Pokpong

He believes that a facial expression is a window into the soul

I like this saying and believe it to be true

I was inspired by this and followed his technique with the background, single toned colour, but i changed the style when it came to the face. I added a lot more colours, in a rather random notion. I wanted to see what effects the colours would have on the viewers.

I plan to change this technique i used and develop it more. Too many colours in my opinion. or is it?

I was in my experimental stage when i found out this interesting technique

So i continued on with it

I would create watered down acrylic paint in cups

Then placing cotton pads inside, one by one.

Placing them on the paper which in fact is a special kind of paper. i tried looking for it in UK art shops but they are yet to be seen. 

After i place the cotton in, i pull it out and place it in a creative order on the paper

After that i let it work its process

The Beauty about this is that their is a performance going on during the drying process, it continues to change. Every second form the start is different 

The water spreads first but still wet, the the colour follows. 

Its really a wonderful process, i enjoy it because i get to see it evolve every minute of the day whilst drying, and is very delicate at the end which gives it this unique touch.

Subconscious Art

I remembered last year, i looked slightly into people and their daily schedules. 

How there is a slight repetition. 

For example, if you go to Starbucks every morning to get a cup of coffee, it is unlikely that tomorrow you would go to Costa and get Green tea instead. 

People being afraid of change. 

This piece, i started off with a note, stuck to my bathroom mirror so it would be a reminder every day.

I would do something, add something to my canvas everyday but the twist is that i didn't know what i was going to do. 

There is NO PLAN!

Each day i would go to the canvas (repetition) and create something subconsciously, completely automatic.

I started this piece on the 23/10/13

Day 1 - Buy blank canvas

Day 2 - Mixture of water and acrylic paint
Automated plashes and spills on canvas
3 colours; blue, white and red

Day 3 - Ink

Used brush to apply and spilling

Day 4 - Rose and Cherry flavoured soap

Day 5 - Quick cut out of a human feature

Red spray paint

Day 6 - Adhesive and Coins

1p, 2p and 5p Coins

Day 7 - Oil Pant applied with palette knife 

Day 8 - Sand with Hot glue

Day 9 - Charcoal 

Day 10 - Conditioner

Day 11- PVA Glue

Day 12 - Rope

(Now as you can see, this is not a full shot of the whole canvas because in fact, i FORGOT to take a photo that day, which happens frequently in everyday lives, where someone forgets a task or two)

Day 13 - Thick lines of Acrylic 

Day 14 - Olive Oil

Day 15 - Fire

I used a flammable liquid to get it going

This fire created a lot of smoke, it would have continued heavily which is why i blew it out before it got carried away. 

Final Look

This is what it looked like at the end of the 15 days

I think it looks rather abstract 

I was imagining how long the Artwork label would be and how that could be fairly amusing to see in a gallery. 

I had to stop after 15 days because I was going up to Scotland and didn't want to cheat, i could see this being a piece carried on for a longer duration. 

Maybe a month? 

On a much larger canvas!

I would place a piece of wood or metal block on the back so i could get civilians to walk on it on the street, leave it out somewhere, bikes riding over it, things involving human interaction.
