David Choe : An inspiration towards my practice

CONTINUING WORK - 2ND YEAR CHELSEA COLLEGE 

This is an artist that has inspired me through my new series of work in my current practice. His name ladies and gentleman is David Chow. He is a Graffiti artist that has made a name for himself after his commission with Facebook in which he took shares instead of cash, because of Facebook's success, his shares are priceless. 

His work however are too priceless. 

Ive always loved colour, in these pieces, the overall use of colour and colour combinations creates nothing but positive energy when viewed upon. Vibrant and energetic. 

He always has a main subject composed into the image, but surrounded with other visual elements 

His style is so free, variation of movements and use of colour interest me

He is the main artist i have been looking at at being inspired by his work i have decided to create some of my own. 

I continued doing what i did from my last piece. Concentrating on the Graffiti/Street art in London Markets and also unnoticed places such as alleyways, corners and remote locations. 

My first piece was "Bricklane Market #1, 2014" 

Personally i think these pieces work really well. There is a strong depth in the image, and colour use is strong and vibrant. Very aesthetically pleasing to the viewers because it catches their attention. 

 These two pieces i made at similar times. They have a similarity through the use of colours and composition of images, and the balance between text and imagery.

This was a day painting. Interested in a south east asian artist named Attasit Pokpong

He believes that a facial expression is a window into the soul

I like this saying and believe it to be true

I was inspired by this and followed his technique with the background, single toned colour, but i changed the style when it came to the face. I added a lot more colours, in a rather random notion. I wanted to see what effects the colours would have on the viewers.

I plan to change this technique i used and develop it more. Too many colours in my opinion. or is it?

Art You Miss Everyday

During visits to galleries, i look at how people interact with the space around them and how they loo at the pieces of art. 

We take our time to look carefully at every detail, the brushstrokes and colours in galleries but why not outside?

So in Edinburgh i did a small project, looking at 3 things. 

1. The texture in our surrounding

2. The colour within the texture, the colour expressed in the overall photograph. 

3. Evidence of people's interaction

Footprints

Wear and tear (both weather and people)

I really like this piece, the fact that it emphasises the sunlight that shines on a single leaf in between the gaps.

Shadow looks like a face

Experimented with different colours, changing the mood of the image which can create a different outcome to viewers. 

Contrast between the subject and colour when turned to pinky red. 

The colours are really exaggerated here and i loved how it turned out. (top and bottom)

Footprints showing signs of presence.

Damages in nature, like broken twigs caused by mankind.

This is a tear in a taxi cab

How did it happen? 

Over time or single action?

Words carved into the stone

Stop and take a moment next time your out to look at your surroundings in much more detail.

Fauvist Landscapes of Giggleswick 

During this period i was fascinated with the outdoors just as much as i was fascinated with this style of painting, inspired by the fauves, Claude Monet's Venice twilight was a piece i was truly fascinated by. How the colours set the mood of the painting and therefore the response of the viewership. I realised that colours have a psychological power if used correctly, it can alter a persons mood, change ones emotion or even implant one. 

i even used oil paint to try reproducing the Venice twilight by Monet. 

I went outside and did some life drawings

Experimented with colours and brush makings 

Above pieces were simply paintings on test strips of canvas 

Below are the larger pieces that i took my time on

I worked hard and focused a lot on the brush making, i wanted the details to stand out from a distance, especially in the skies. I wanted the viewers eyesight to move with the markings on the canvas, markings that guide them throughout the entire painting through the uses of colour and directional mark makings of a brush. 

The skies were not as brilliantly executed in the painting above 

This piece i finished my series on. 

The skies are so powerful, i emphasised the blue, like a giant mass of weathering clouds crashing into the landscape, but what it also does is leads the viewers line of sight throughout the whole painting, it guides you from top to bottom. 

These Landscape paintings was one of my most enjoyable series, i look forward to getting back into it in the future.
